International Financial Intelligence Units Day

The 9th of June marks the launch of the International Financial Intelligence Units (FIU) Day, with this year commemorating the occasion for the first time in recognition of the vital role played by Financial Intelligence Units in safeguarding the global financial system. The date coincides with the anniversary of the establishment of the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units in 1995.

This occasion reflects the growing importance of FIUs as a fundamental pillar in combating financial crime. Through their role in collecting, analyzing, and exchanging financial information in support of law enforcement efforts, FIUs contribute to strengthening integrity and transparency within financial systems and reinforcing international cooperation in addressing cross-border financial threats.

The Financial Information Unit serves as the national centre responsible for receiving and analyzing Suspicious Transaction Report (STRs) from financial institutions and Designated Non-Financial Business and Professions (DNFBPs), as well as any other information related to money laundering, associated predicate offences, and terrorism financing, and for disseminating, spontaneously or upon request, the results of that analysis to competent authorities.
