The QFIU participated in a virtual international workshop on “Updating the Sectoral Assessment of the Illicit Financing Risks in the NPO Sector”, on January 17-18, 2022, which was organized by the Regulatory Authority for Charitable Activities, with the participation of the Green Acres Consulting Ltd, UK based consulting firm, Qatar Financial Information Unit (QFIU), the National Anti- Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Committee (NAMLC), in addition to Qatar Charity and the Qatar Red Crescent Society.
The workshop was an important platform for various stakeholders in the NPO sector in the State of Qatar, where they discussed efforts and best practices related to updating and developing the sector’s risk assessment methodology, in order to facilitate the effective management of emerging and changing risks and threats. The supervisory authorities also highlighted Qatar’s significant progress and its firm political commitment to combating money laundering and terrorist financing and achieving the highest level of compliance with international standards, especially FATF related standards and recommendations.
The QFIU participated actively in the workshop, where Mr. Mohammed Nasser Al-Yafei and Mr. Yasser Abdel Aziz, presented the latest patterns and indicators of terrorist financing in the NPO sector.
At the end of the workshop a joint road map with clear steps was developed to promote joint efforts in updating the sectoral assessment methodology, which constitutes a pillar in protecting the sector and strengthening its effective role from abuse, in accordance with the international standards and the principles of integrity of the global financial system.
